FILCCA Officers in Western Australia

A short report from FILCCA President Florence Parker on FILCCA Officers' visit to Western Australia over the Australia Day weekend.

1.  An interim committee headed by Andrea Niblett was formed to oversee the formation of the state council.  About 6 organisations are represented on that committee.  This was a result of the attendees' desire to form the council.  It was their consensus that it is now time for WA to ‘unite’ and form one umbrella organisation which will be charged to communicate with the government and FilCCA.

2.  There are a number of issues relating to 457 visa holders which FILCCA, as national body, can investigate more and try to lobby for it.  It was noted that Andrea has 457 issues and a report should be due soon (final doc and posting on 15 March)

3.  Vivien Mante and Jopet Maribay are co-opted to represent the Youth of WA.  Vivien Mante is nominated for the VP Youth Affairs position.  It would be a good idea to have someone from that area to lead the youth with co-opted positions in different states.

4.  Youth Forum and Leader’s forum- a joint activity together with a possible youth activity during the month of October (preferably on 24-25 Oct) in WA. This will be a good groundwork for WA- they are interested in hosting the 2012 conference.  Please let me know your thoughts on this so that we can start to plan. A suggestion for FilCCA to find funding source for these activities.  Myrla (as VP Int), can find out funding sources that can be tapped for these activities.

5.  Visit to Rockingham 457 visa holders.  Some of these workers came from Tasmania initially (are already have PR) but there are a number of them who are still 457 holders.  There appears to be lack of information and awareness of their rights; this has been echoed during the community meeting at Kings’ Park.

6.  Separate meetings/visit with other community groups who were not present during the community meeting at Kings Park .

7.  As for the election of VP youth Affairs position, information from the candidate will be sought so that a good background info on them would be available prior to casting of votes.
